Elon Musk has openly expressed his desire to expand his family and has reportedly shared his ambition to have a “legion-level” number of children before the world reaches its end.

A recent article from the Wall Street Journal reveals that Musk, who is already a father to 14 children with four different partners, perceives his offspring as a “legion,” a term historically associated with a Roman military unit comprising thousands of soldiers.

“To achieve legion-level before the apocalypse, we will need to utilize surrogates,” the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, aged 53, allegedly messaged Ashley St. Clair while she was expecting their child, who was born earlier this year. In a further reference to Roman history, the report noted that their son is named Romulus, who, according to legend, founded the city alongside his twin brother Remus, only to later kill him following a dispute.

The article also suggested that Musk has turned to X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, which he acquired in 2022, to seek additional women to bear his children.

In reaction to the report released on Tuesday, April 15, Musk tweeted, “TMZ >> WSJ.”

A representative for Musk did not provide a response to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

For many years, Musk has voiced his concerns regarding a potential “underpopulation crisis” facing society.

“I cannot stress this enough; there are not enough people,” he stated during a 2021 event with the Wall Street Journal. “One of the greatest threats to civilization is the declining birth rate… If people do not have more children, civilization will face collapse.”
Following the birth of twins with Neuralink executive Shivon Zilis, he appeared to reference the news on social media by stating, “doing my best to help the underpopulation crisis.”

When Mark Cuban previously inquired about his plans for fatherhood, Musk—who remains dedicated to SpaceX’s mission to reach Mars—reportedly responded, “Mars needs people.”

In February 2025, St. Clair announced on X that she and Musk had welcomed a child together in September 2024. According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, the results of Musk’s paternity test in their custody case indicated a “Probability of Paternity” of 99.9999%. A representative for St. Clair confirmed to PEOPLE that the paternity test revealed an almost 100% likelihood of paternity.

Musk became a father for the first time in 2002 when his ex-wife Justine Wilson gave birth to their son Nevada Alexander, who tragically passed away at 10 weeks. The couple later had five additional children: twins Vivian and Griffin, aged 20, and triplets Kai, Saxon, and Damian, aged 19.

He has three children with his former partner Grimes: sons X Æ A-12 and Techno Mechanicus, along with daughter Exa Dark Sideræl. Furthermore, he shares three children with Zilis: twins Strider and Azure, and daughter Arcadia.
