McConnell Takes Another Shot At Trump With Ukraine Comment

This week, Kentucky Republican Senator Mitch McConnell criticized President Donald Trump, indicating that the 47th president’s failure to identify Russia as the exclusive aggressor responsible for the conflict in Ukraine demonstrates a significant misapprehension of negotiation dynamics and leverage.

In a statement marking the third anniversary of the conflict, McConnell emphasized that Vladimir Putin is solely accountable for the ‘human catastrophe’ and cautioned that even if Ukrainian forces were to disarm, ‘Putin’s ambitions would extend beyond Kyiv.’ McConnell remarked, ‘Misunderstanding this reality is both humiliating and detrimental.’ He further criticized the Biden administration for its ‘regrettable indecision and inadequate responses’ to Russian aggression.

Although McConnell did not explicitly name Trump, he remarked that failing to recognize the United States’ desire to counter Russian aggression would be ‘even more disgraceful.’

Dismissing Russia as the clear and unprovoked aggressor is not merely an inappropriate moral equivalence; it signifies a profound misapprehension of the dynamics of negotiations and leverage,” he stated.

McConnell, the chair of the Senate’s Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, expressed this viewpoint shortly after Trump asserted that Ukraine instigated the conflict with Russia and referred to Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine’s president, as ‘a dictator without elections.’

‘The United States is justified in pursuing a resolution to this conflict, but any resolution that does not limit Russian ambitions, uphold Ukrainian sovereignty, or reinforce American credibility with both allies and adversaries is not a resolution at all,’ McConnell cautioned.

Conversely, such a superficial peace would provoke additional hostility,” he stated.

McConnell remarked that the “coalition of aggressors from Beijing to Moscow,” which encompasses Iran and North Korea, aims for a resolution in Ukraine that “erodes the credibility of American deterrence and renders U.S. interests more susceptible.”

“In the absence of a definitive and unwavering commitment to the leadership and order that supports our prosperity and security, America’s adversaries will achieve precisely what they desire,” he asserted.

McConnell’s remarks arise as the senator from Kentucky has been contending with various health challenges.

Having resigned from that position last year due to escalating concerns regarding his health, McConnell offered an update following reports of multiple falls in February.

The 82-year-old Republican from Kentucky was observed utilizing a wheelchair following a fall down a short flight of stairs at least once while exiting the Senate chamber. “Fox has confirmed that McConnell fell down the Senate stairs after casting his vote to confirm Scott Turner as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development.

The extent of his injuries remains uncertain; however, Fox has been informed that he seems to be fine. McConnell received assistance from Senators Steve Daines (R-MT) and Markwayne Mullin (R-OK),” tweeted Chad Pergram, a congressional correspondent for Fox News.

Senator Steve Daines (R-Mont.) informed reporters after observing the incident: ‘It appears he simply lost his footing on the steps. I was directly behind him and assisted him in getting back up, and he proceeded to walk unaided to lunch.’ McConnell was later seen exiting the lunch on foot, supported by an aide.

However, he was subsequently observed by the media returning to the venue in a wheelchair. In December, he experienced another fall within the Capitol building after a lunch with fellow senators, which led to a minor facial injury and a sprained wrist.

Senate Minority Whip John Thune (R-S.D.), who took over from McConnell as the Senate GOP leader in January, informed reporters after the weekly Senate GOP policy luncheon that McConnell was ‘well’ and ‘present in his office.’ He directed any inquiries regarding McConnell to the senator’s staff.

After his fall, it has been reported that the senator was aided by medical personnel using a wheelchair.
