Live 153 dead and hundreds injured after 7.7 earthquake rocks Myanmar and Thailand

153 people have been confirmed as dead, with more than 700 others injured after a magnitude 7.7 earthquake rocked Myanmar, officials have said.

It’s the first major update from Myanmar’s military leadership since the earthquake this morning. They added there will be more casualties as the search for any survivors continues.

Major search and rescue operations are also underway in Bangkok after the earthquake struck neighbouring Myanmar, with the impact rocking Thailand’s capital.

Rescuers are looking for 81 workers who went missing after a Bangkok high rise collapsed.

Myanmar declared a state of emergency after the earthquake rocked the nation and rippled out to other nearby countries earlier this morning.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said a 7.7 magnitude earthquake had struck central Myanmar at a depth of 6.2 miles just before 1 pm local time (6:20 GMT).

The epicentre of the disaster was about 10.6 miles from the city of Mandalay, which has a population of about 1.2 million, according to USGS.

When was the last powerful earthquake in Myanmar?
Sarah Hooper
The earthquake in Myanmar this morning was one of the largest to hit the country in decades.

Seismic activity isn’t uncommon in the area, but the last 7.7 magnitude quake to hit the country was in 1946.

Voranoot Thirawat, a lawyer working in central Bangkok, said her first indication that something was wrong came when she saw a light swinging back and forth.

Then she heard the building creaking as it moved from the shockwaves. She and her colleagues ran down 12 flights of stairs.

‘In my lifetime, there was no earthquake like this in Bangkok,’ she said.

London resident recalls earthquake unfolding while she was in a movie theatre

Mandy Tang, 38, said she was watching a film called The Red Envelope when the earthquake happened.

‘It happened to be quite an action-packed scene when the shake happened, so I initially thought it could have been Imax effects,’ she said.

‘I looked around and none of the local audience left their seats. However, my Taiwanese friend insisted it was an earthquake, so I walked out of the theatre with her, and we met the security guards coming to evacuate us just outside the theatre.

‘We could see the doors were opening and closing, all the chairs were shaking. It was quite nerve-wracking, I’ve never experienced such a strong shake. It is quite scary.’

United Nations is ‘mobilising’ to help badly-hit Myanmar
Sarah Hooper
The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said: ‘The government of Myanmar has asked for international support and our team in Myanmar is already in contact in order to fully mobilise our resources in the region to support the people of Myanmar.

‘But of course there are other countries impacted. The epicentre is in Myanmar, and Myanmar is the weakest country in this present situation.’

Rescue crews are working through the night to help free more than 110 people trapped under the rubble.

Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said: ‘There is still a possibility of finding more bodies, as some are trapped under the building’s structure.

‘Special techniques are needed to safely remove these bodies to prevent further collapses caused by shifting structural elements.’

Charity on the ground says they’ve ‘never seen such destruction’
Sarah Hooper
Haider Yaqub, Country Director for Plan International in Myanmar, who is currently in Yangon, said: ‘Although a full picture of the damage is still emerging, most of us have never seen such destruction.

‘There are high levels of stress and anxiety, as people are trying to reach their relatives and disinformation is spreading on social media.

‘Without a doubt, the humanitarian needs will be significant. We are working hard to make contact with communities in the hardest hit areas in and around Mandalay, but already, we know that critical infrastructure has been destroyed, with landlines not functioning, and that houses and other buildings have collapsed not just in Myanmar but in neighbouring Thailand as well.

‘This disaster strikes when Myanmar is already grappling with conflict, and we are extremely concerned about the toll that yet another crisis will take on children, especially girls, and their families.’
